Sonnenzimmer is Nick Butcher and Nadine Nakanishi. "Having worked out of the Bird Machine for several years—mentored by Jay Ryan—we decided to start our own shop in Summer of 2006. A happy string of events helped it all come together. Sonnenzimmer is located on the northside of Chicago, in a neighborhood called Roscoe Village. Here we meet, greet, hang out with fellow friends and artists and crank away in the kindred spirit of our Chicago colleagues."

When finding these paintings for a moment I wondered if they were a new series of Gerhard Richter's overpainted photographs. The colors used were much more striking though. They were made by Yago Hortal (1983), a spanish painter based in Berlin who happens to have a very rich and fluid use of acrylic.

—Contemporary art has been marked with the synthesis of various forms of art. Especially, the combination of film, sound, digital art, acrylic, oil and collage have resulted in an almost new form of art. However, it sometimes is also possible to replicate profound synthesis by just using the canvas and paint. The canvas can be used to project ideas that do not belong to the present, the past or the future, but to project thoughts that are not bound by the confinements of time and space.
—Bas Zoontjens is one such artist who creates spectacular effects on the canvas without using a lot of technology. The simplicity of his techniques is contrasted with the images and ideas that go with his painting. A look at his paintings takes the viewer on a journey through space, time and a dimension that humans still have to learn of. Bas is a Dutch artist who shuttles between Rotterdam and Berlin. After having graduated from the Royal Academy of Art & Design (1998) and the Grafic Lyceum Eindhoven, he received several stipends and grants from many Dutch institutions.
—Bas’ art almost takes the viewer to a different universe and a different reality, where one’s own world and subjective reality may seem unreal and out of place.

—'Painting is an illusion. Modernist painting is flat but as soon as you put a mark on a canvas, space is generated. As soon as a mark is made, the space is activated. One can perceive depth. In leaving raw, untouched surface, there is a relationship between what is there and what is not there'.
—Ropes are a repetitive theme in his paintings and they are a tool for illusion, one that creates movement. 'It’s like bonsai. The Chinese monks would meditate on the mountainsides and see the trees that grew curved and bent off cliffs. They thought it was very beautiful, like magic. So they began to grow trees and bind them with rope to grow a certain way. It’s about restraint as a form of creation, but also about ego in a way. Human beings are creators of nature. ‘Oh look, I can mimic nature, I can control it in a way.’
