Nina Leen

Nina Leen was one of the first women photographers for LIFE. Born in Russia, grew up in Germany, Switzerland and Italy. Upon first arriving in the United States in 1939, her reporter's eye led to a series of the habits and rituals of her newly adopted homeland. In 1945, Leen joined LIFE, producing over 40 covers and countless spreads for the magazine. Her series on, "A Teenager Monopolizes the Telephone," or her descriptions and images of "The American Male," are portraits of the North American society of its time.

—My work explores perceptions of beauty and horror, comfort and discomfort. I use anatomical and medical imagery as a point of departure to explore these dualities and our ambivalence towards the human body. This juxtaposition creates a response that fluctuates between seduction and repulsion, comfort and alienation.— Laura Splan is a New York based mixed media artist. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Art from the University of California, Irvine where she originally studied Biological Sciences. She received her Master of Fine Art in Sculpture from Mills College in Oakland, CA.

Stephan Lomp (b.1973) is a german illustrator who is based in Düsseldorf, Germany. He studied visual communications at the Fachochschule Düsseldorf. "I am a co-founder of the award winning underground comic anthology “Herrensahne” and published 10 issues with fellow illustrators like Max Fiedler, Tobi Dahmen, Roman Klonek, Leo Leowald and others. Together we had exhibitions in Luxemburg, Luzern and Cologne. Just recently I published my first childrens book, the ZOO ABC at the Ausnahmeverlag."

"He was closely aligned with Aestheticism, the British counterpart of Decadence and Symbolism. Most of his images are done in ink, and feature large dark areas contrasted with large blank ones, and areas of fine detail contrasted with areas with none at all.

Beardsley was the most controversial artist of the Art Nouveau era, renowned for his dark and grotesque images. His work reflected the decadence of his era and his influence was enormous, clearly visible in the work of the French Symbolists, the Poster art Movement of the 1890s and the work of many later-period Art Nouveau artists like Pape and Clarke. A public character as well as a private eccentric, he once said, "I have one aim—the grotesque. If I am not grotesque I am nothing." source
